Why plan ahead

Most choices are gone by April.

By the time the year ends, most decisions that affect your tax bill are already made. Planning during the year leaves time to set aside the right amount and time large purchases. It also helps you avoid underpayment penalties.

FAQ

Questions about tax planning

Who needs to make quarterly estimated payments?

Usually, people whose income has no tax taken out, such as 1099 work or business income, need them when they expect to owe more than a set amount for the year. We check whether that applies to you.

When are estimated payments due?

For most people: April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 of the next year. The deadlines page has the exact dates.

Is tax planning only for businesses?

No. Families whose income changed and people with side work can plan too. So can anyone who owed a lot last year.

When should I start?

Any time. Earlier gives you more options, though. Many choices that lower your tax have to happen before December 31.
